Fly into:

Calgary in the Alberta Provence, a 2.5 hour flight from San Francisco.

To Stay:

Emerald Lake Lodge. This is an old Canadian lodge, a 2.5 hour drive Northwest from Calgary airport. Their restaurant has all local game meat: Elk, Buffalo and organic free range meats. There are wood burning fire places in every room. The location and the setting of the Lodge feel a bit like you are at adult camp with activities such as x-country skiing, snowshoeing and skiing at nearby Lake Louise. Closer to Calgary is Banff where the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Buffalo Mountain Lodge or Rimrock are the places to stay.

Banff Springs Hotel

Lake Louise is the nearby mountain with fantastic terrain. If you want to shorten your drive by an hour and don’t mind the slightly more crowded atmosphere there are fantastic options in Banff. There you can ski Sunshine Village or Mt. Norway which have less diverse terrain but tend to have much better snow.

Chateau Lake Louise

To Have a Drink at:

Chateau Lake Louise is gorgeous, overlooking the lake surrounded by mountains. There you can also skate around on the frozen lake in the winter amidst the ice sculptures. For some local flavor, try the near Canmore Hotel outside of the park. It is the second oldest bar in Alberta — the beer of choice there is Kokanee Gold.

To Eat:

In Canmore, right outside of the park and close to Banff try Crazy Weed or The Trough for dinner. Le Fournil in Canmore is a great bakery for a snack or breakfast. In Banff try Buffalo Mountain Lodge for good game meat and fantastic Buffalo carpaccio.  In Field, in the park and close to Lake Louise try the Truffle Pig or the restaurants at Emerald Lake Lodge.
